Xinhai’s 1 Mtpa tungsten tailings recovery project in Uzbekistan has just hit another significant civil construction milestone. Despite steep terrain, limited working space, scorching summer heat, and frequent sandstorms, the project has continued to move forward steadily according to plan — thanks to careful planning, strong execution, and proactive problem-solving.
Civil Construction Progress Advances on Schedule
Civil works officially began on April 5, 2026, with full completion targeted for October 2026.
Several key areas have already made solid progress:
In the main process plant, the raft foundation along Axis A is complete, and work on Axis D is advancing smoothly. Foundations for the shaking tables and surrounding retaining walls are also progressing well.
In the thickener area, the main foundation has been finished, with short-column construction and pump pit works following in sequence.
In the water tank area, foundation works have passed quality inspection and are now ready for equipment installation.
These achievements provide a solid structural base for the upcoming mechanical installation and commissioning phases, keeping the entire project on track.

Why Early Construction Planning Makes All the Difference
Many mining projects run into delays not because of equipment shortages, but because civil works fall behind and hold up everything else. Small deviations in foundations, poor site organization, or bad sequencing can quickly create bottlenecks that ripple through the entire project.

From day one, this project was planned with the end in mind. Civil works, equipment interfaces, material logistics, and construction sequencing were all coordinated as one integrated plan. This “engineering-first” approach helps avoid rework, reduces idle time between teams, and keeps the project moving forward smoothly.
For international EPC projects, this kind of coordination is crucial for balancing quality, schedule, and cost.
Challenge One: Limited Space on Steep Terrain
The site’s steep topography created one of the biggest hurdles — very restricted working space. This made equipment movement, material storage, and multi-team operations more difficult.

To overcome this, the team optimized the site layout early on. Heavy equipment routes were planned in advance, open areas were organized for efficient material storage, and different work fronts were carefully sequenced. By treating logistics as an engineering challenge rather than just a construction headache, the project has maintained good momentum despite the physical constraints.
Challenge Two: Delivering Quality in Extreme Summer Heat
Since mid-June, daytime temperatures have regularly climbed above 36°C, with peaks expected to exceed 45°C in July and August. Under such heat, worker safety, concrete quality, and overall efficiency all become serious concerns.

Rather than sticking to a normal schedule, the team shifted to staggered working hours, focusing critical tasks like concrete pouring and reinforcement during cooler morning and evening periods. Heat protection measures, hydration support, and emergency medical resources were put in place, while extra curing and moisture-retention steps were added for concrete works to prevent cracking.
By planning around the environment instead of fighting it, the project has protected both people and quality.
Challenge Three: Staying on Track Through Sandstorms
Frequent strong winds and sandstorms have posed another real test. Dust storms can halt outdoor work and threaten both materials and freshly completed structures.
The team didn’t wait for storms to hit. They set up a weather monitoring and early warning system, adjusted plans based on forecasts, reinforced temporary structures ahead of bad weather, and properly protected completed works and materials. Once conditions improved, sites were quickly cleaned and inspected so work could resume safely.
This proactive approach has kept unnecessary downtime to a minimum.
